The photographer Cindy Sherman collects clothes from different periods of time, and she herself is the subject of all her photographs. However, these self-studies are not really self-portraits, because they don’t aim to show her as she “really is.” Instead, for each photograph, she dresses up in clothes from her collection as a character from movies, ads, art history, or everyday life.
